Overall, I do believe that comcast is a great place to work and their compensation/benefits package is great. Comcast is one of those big corporations that you can find yourself work for the rest of your life, not necessarly doing the same stuff. Comcast is not just an ISP anymore, it is a "wholesale technology distributor" to milions of homes in US. Cable TV, internet, digital phone, entertainment shows on video-on-demand, maybe wireless tomorrow, that is the whole spectrum of technology.

That said, comcast is not a "software shop" per say, but it is moving into that direction and if it plays its cards right, it might become a big player in the Internet space with competitors of the likes of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

I have been working in comcast for 3 years now and I have not seen the problems that your "friend" has reported. But in either case the job of a "skilled" engineer is to overcome all odds and succeed . If your friend is having issues he should try to make his environment better than complaining or discouraging people from joining comcast.
