Dasavatharam – Music Review

Posted by Anandhan Subbiah on Apr 25, 2008 in Movies, Music52 comments

Himesh Reshamiyya has performed the music score for a tamil movie for the first time. He is lucky that he is doing the score for a Kamal Hassan movie with a budget in excess of 35 crores. This is a typical Himesh album with high pitch vocals ,heavy bass and Keyboard generated sounds.

Ulaga Nayagan (Vinith)

A song patronizing the hero is sung by a new bee Vinith. Honestly I don’t know what to make of this song. It was neither good or bad but it did not leave a bad taste. The energy level for this kind of song is certainly missing.

Kalai Mattum (Hariharan)

Hariharan sings this song with his usual relish. The instrumentation suggests that this could be a song from the medieval period. The emphasis is more on the lyrics than the song itself even though I could not decipher the lyrics no matter how hard I tried . From whatever I understood this song could be opposing blind faith in God. The Arabic mix with the violin is interesting. This is possibly the best song of the album.

Oh Sanam (Kamal Hassan and Mahalakshmi Iyer)

This is a peppy song sung by Kamal himself. This is the only song I could hum after listening to the full album. Mahalakshmi supports him with her vocals and does a good job at it . The rhythm is decent and this is a typical Himesh song with the high pitch and heavy bass.

Mukunda Mukunda (Sadhana Sargam , Kamal Hassan)

This is a devotional song. It is very pleasing to the ear and definitely not bad but again it is not mind blowing either.I would have rated this song as best in the album but I was searching for the  next button in my remote towards the end when I was forced to hear a hideous voice. I can understand if this is a situational song but why on earth should I listen to such a horrible voice all of a sudden when I am listening to the awesome Sadhana Saragam ?

Kaa (Shalini Singh)

This song sounds like a disco song from the 80’s. It is fast paced and Shalini has done a decent job. I am assuming that this is a song for Mallika Sherawat. This song has a very nice pace and rhythm to it . I could not understand the lyrics for the most part but the song is at least peppy.

Oh Sanam (Himesh and Mahalakshmi Iyer)

This is a remix version of the song with the same title sung by Kamal Hassan. I will leave it with the fact that this is a remix and Himesh can pronounce tamil words better than Udit Narayan.

I am lost as to why Kamal did not go with the very talented music directors in the south. Rehman and Harris must have been busy but I think even the new music directors G.V Prakash or Joshua Sridhar would have done a better job than Himesh. I was not thrilled even with one of the songs even though I would not call any of them bad . Even in ‘Hey Ram’ there was one song which was mesmerizing even though the rest of the album was a damp squib. The expectation from a kamal Hassan movie  is very high and the budget of this movie requires a terrific music score but the compositions of  Himesh are way short of the high expectation. Maybe he recorded the songs when he was busy creating music for 10 movies in a day.

One of the issues could be that the the music was created two years ago but the bigger issue is it sounds like it is 10 years old.

I am just going to wait for the movie now.

  1. TO ALL KAMAL FANS: I HAVE WASTED MY TIME AND MONEY ON THE CD!!!!!!You are damn correct my friend, the songs suck big time. I dun understand Kamal for choosing Himesh???? There are alot of good music director from South and he choose Himesh.. His music sounds really crappy. For such a high cost film, the songs miss life and songs. All I can say is for such a big movie, the songs are really crappy. I am suprised they we planning a same slot release with Sivaji. I think ARR would have eaten Himesh music, This is a joke. Kamal needs to be more serious on his music selection. What i can say is for Dasavatharam, the music sucks BIG time and honestly it is aflop. I would suggest Kamal fans not to expect anything from the music. Now my only hope is the movie. I hope it does not such like the songs. If u buy the audio cd, ur gonna waste ur money.. Just listen online.

    TO KAMAL:
MARMAYOGI needs ARR. He is the musicians youcan provide good music for ur peroid movie (LAGAAN, LO Bhagavath Singh, RISING, Jodhaa Akbar) else DON’T have any songs in the movie….

    FROM,
FRUSTATED KAMAL FAN WHO WAITED 2.5 YEARS FOR DASA Audio.

  2. This is a fairly accurate assessment – I also fail to understand why Kamal and the team did not choose local music directors – Yuvan, Devisriprasad,Mani Sharma, …Music is a very very big disappointment and it just does not go with the magnum opus status of the movie. The music is a pure “dud”

  3. What a SHOCK. DASA Audio has failed the music. For a High cost movie, the songs sounds like a joke. AGAIN I AM VERY VERY VERY UNHAPPY WITH MUSIC.
I listened to the music online. After listening to it for more than 10 times, i still can’t give positive comment. The songs are really annoying. There is not a single song that stands out (PS – Or eve to listen).
What is wrong with our Kamal sir? IF ARR was busy, there is Harrsi Jayaraj to did magic to VV. He would have happily agreed. He would have scored 100 times better than Himesh….
I am very very frustated and dissapointed with music. All this waiting and the songs are terrible.
Lets wait and see the Movie KAMAL FANS, Hope it is not another Aalavanthaan.

AGAIN THE MUSIC IS A DISGRACE FOR THE MOVIE.

PS – IF anyone who knows KAMAL sir, pass the message to his. FROM A FAN WHO IS VERY DISSAPOINTED.

  4. a request to the reviewer…
The supposed “horrible” voice… is kamalji’s voice… in the avatar of a 100 yr old lady… it is centainly most difficult to accomplish such a voice… so understand what effort goes behind the song and then comment… such a voice is required for both the song n the movie… so next time…maybe u should not search for the NEXT button without knowing what’s actually happening…

    dasavatharam rox!

  5. I agree with aditya on the effort part and I am a big fan of Kamal but I definitely don’t think it was a wise decision to include that in the song without an alternate version.

  6. Being a big time Kamal Fan, My spirit was first dead when I heard Aalawandan Music. Kamal is still sleeping with illayaraja and brings out some 70s Music.
Kamal, Please hear some trendy Music in Tamil.

Dont expect anything exciting from Kamal !

  7. I am not sure what is the crib about the album. I thought the album is very nice and worth multiple hearing. It is certainly not mind blowing or anything out of the world. But, all the songs except the “Kaa Karuppanukkum” song were very nice. I noticed that the reviewer did not understand the lyrics of some of the songs. I had no such trouble. The lyrics in “Oh Sanam” and “Kallai mattum kandal” were awesome and “Ulaganayagan” was innovative (however such eulogising songs are better suited in Rajinikanth or Vijayakanth movies).

The end bit of Mukunda Mukunda song was avoidable. It should have been edited out of the audio.

Over all, I think Dasavatharam music is very good and it is the best in 2008. I have a feeling that everyone will appreciate it when they see the movie. The music will be a hit but it will be forgotten by next year… just like the music of Shivaji.

I am happy that Kamal did not use ARR. ARR music has been no more effective than music of others in the past few years. He does 1 good album per year.

    Looking forward to the movie.

  8. I do agree that Kamal Hasaan lives in the oldies of India music. The music is raw and not well merged and compiled. The lyrics were good, but Himesh has no credit for that, because he barely understands any Tamil. All in all, Kamal Hasaan is a fool to not use A R Rahman, who is the God of Indian Cinema Music. The Dasaavatharam movie looks amazing though. I really hope that this movie makes it for Kamal. He’s a great actor, but risks it all at once. I wish him all the best, but the music was defineately not good at all.

  9. Dasa music is very disappointing. But it is well expected. What you can expect from Himesh, who doesn’t know South-Indian tradition? Also, for kamal’s movie, in last 10years, none of his movie songs are blockbuster except 1 or 2.

  10. DEAR KAMAL FANS

This is a part-period movie. hence the songs are a bit old-based tunes. but i should appreciate HR. mukunda and kallai are master-pieces opposite to HR’s routine raps. oh ho sanam and kaa need to be heard many times to get adjusted to. ulaganagane is a disappointment. i heard, in this song, all the 10 roles will mingle and dance along KSR. may be, after watching the movie, this song will also click.

my overall assessment is 3.5 out of 5. not a bad album. even shivaji album was not rocking till the release of movie. so pl wait. only out of blue moons, we will get albums like punnagai mannan, apoorva sahodarargal, thevar magan etc where the album and movie both rocked.

all the very best to crew of D.

eagar kamal fan sitting on the edge of seat!

  11. hi Anandhan Subbiah,

Yes , your comment is true.. Not a mind-blowing album with such a huge budget and expectation . But also not bad indeed.
Kamal’s Songs usually comes together with the story line and so we need to judge the songs after the movie release. Most of kamal film songs even Guna, Thever magan, Hey ram songs were criticized in the beginning which turned out to be evergreen now..
And “Kallai matum” is not a song that imposes blind faith in God. Instead , it is a song which describes the conflict between Vainava-s and Saiva-s in the south during 12th century. It has really amazing lyrics. The first line means ” If u see in Idol(kall -in tamil) ,you cant see God and If you see God ,you cant feel the pain of stones (also Kall) thrown at you”. Vaali has done wonderful job again with ‘Mugunda’ . I really like these two songs and Himesh is worth for it atleast. Ulaganayakane and Oh..sanam are also feel-good numbers.
I really liked the album…And hope it will hit the charts after the movie release…

  12. Completely disappointing…As some one said music sounds 10 yrs old…And why Himesh – when he has not proved himself as atleast
    a good music director.
If the tracks music are pathetic like this, I am wondering how the background score would be…

But at the same time we should also think in Kamal’s angle. He would have definitely had second thoughts about appointing HR as MD. Will really got to wait for the movie and the most important factor being – How well the music gels with the movie.

  13. Hi All,

It was expected. Me too a serious Kamal fan, however due to his over confident he always taking wrong decision. In HeyRam too it happend. Initially he went with some Subramaniam and later came to Ilayaraja. And he gave big ‘pattai namam’ – ofcourse he did by ‘venda veruppu’.

He having ego with ARR. I challenged with my friend and I won in that. Dasavatharam music will be flop. Movie will run because for Kamal’s efforts/get-ups.

Now, by seeing trilor I am havind even doubt on it. As he has to bring 10 characters the story line may goes here and there without sequence.

    Cheer up!

    Regards,
    Noor Mohamed

  14. Not one song is good. Why Blame Himesh. It’s Kamal’s job to get the best from HR.
It’s like watching Dravid playing at the T20 IPL encounter – so boring and out of place. I hope the movie is not as bad

  15. Hariharan’s song is like
    Baba Blacksheep ……..
    with some slokam and flute

Ulaga Nayakan – Enna achi unnaku. Padam gali

    Pavam Oscar Ravi

  16. Hi guys,
I dont know why this album gets too much negative reviews. Is that we are not getting used to songs other than Love duets and kuthu songs and it becomes difficult for us to accept different genre of songs. Not that I am fan of Kamal or HR , I feel this album has mix of every emotion(kallai mattum..) , softness (Mukuntha..) and enthusiasm (ulaganayakane..) for a good movie to come ahead. Need to wait for movie release..

  17. Hi All,

I am KAMAL Fan since child. As all true Thala fans should know Kamal does not give importantce for commecrcial songs and he chooses for songs that blends with the movie. I know the dissapoinment as the expctation was rocket high.
If u listed carefully All 5 songs are difefrent and as its genre.
    Best songs:
    1. Oh Oh sanam (original version)
    2. Ulaganayagane

    Average Songs:
    1. Kallai Mattum
    2. Mukunta
    3. Karupu

This labum is like ARR album listen to it a few time, only from a player not from computer audio. Then you will listen to the actual music and songs.

Overall Good album. Not great… should blend with movie.

  18. I dont know how people are saying that the DASA Audio is worst one…
The things to be cleared here are…

Kamal has done a mistake n selecting the MUSIC DIRECTOR,because A.R.R,Yuvan,Harris could have given a better music.

But the Music for DASA is not a flop or waste..

The songs are really worth hearing and every song except ‘KAA KARUP’ and ‘REMIX’ will be sure hit.

‘Kallai Mattum’ is a different spritual song..
    ‘Mukuntha..’ a melody delight…
    ‘Oh Sanam’ a kamal treat..
    ‘Ulaga nayaga’ for kamal fans…

Sure the DASA audio is great to hear…

  19. Hi All,

“Dasavatharam” songs are disappointing to me no doubt. But how does Kamal feel about it?.That I really wud like to know.If anyone knows about music, songs & film-making,its got to be Kamal. With Dasavatharam being projected like his magnum opus,I still can’t believe he has done a blunder by choosing himesh or the tune selections.Have we all got it wrong here?.Is the movie gonna prove us wrong.I sincerely hope so.

Still atleast for now,its hard to fathom how Kamal can go past Yuvan,Harris or even GVPrakash and choose himesh.Harris & Yuvan are churning out great songs even for crap movies these days(Bheema & Billa for eg). After looking at Dasavatharam trailer,Jackie Chan on his website has mentioned that chinese film makers shud work harder or else Indian films will overtake them soon.Though we make shit loads of movies, chinese flicks are more well renowned worldwide for their class & music.Tan Dun even won an Oscar for the score of “Crouching tiger…”.Now the question is:Was the trailer Jackie saw with or without music??

  20. that was funny “Was the trailer Jackie saw with or without music?”

  21. hai,i am a big fan of kamalhassan.i don’t know why all of them are saying that songs are flop even the kamal fans.kamalhassan movie songs are totally different from other heroes. His songs itself will explain the depth of the story.some songs can impress all when they hear a song once but kamal songs are not like that,if u listen to the songs keenly there are many meaning in that, not simply bla…bla… so hear the song well and post ur comment.

  22. Highly Disappointing.

    Mukuntha saves the album gr8ly.

Kallai Mattum depends on how well it is picturised. I liked the lyrics.

    Oh Oh Sanam is fair.

    – deleted link –

  23. Kamal made a big mistake by not choosin illayaraja

  24. I have listened to this music from telugu album. I am a telugu guy living in Tokyo. For the first two runs I did not find it interesting. But later on I started liking it. It is very good music. By now I have listened to it 30 times. Then I started searching for the music director name came to know that Himesh and got surprised that he could score to the southern taste.
This is brilliant piece of music from him.
“LOKANAYAKUDA” song is TERRIFIC. I thought that all Chennai folks would have been dancing to this tune by now. It very enrgytic. Very different genere. Probably the best song I have heard from Kamal movies.
    Mukunda song is very melodious.
Katukani song is fabulous and runs at ultra pace. Must be for Mallika.
Rayini matram is another good piece of extremely crafted excellent music.

I felt that there is lot of variation Himesh has brought to this album.
    Definitely worth listening.
Please listen to good quality audio.
The lyrics are very good and they are to the context and is very clearly audible in contrast to what one of the reviewer wrote.

From the music I got a feeling that the movie would do well and only concern is 10 roles.

I AM NOT A KAMAL FAN. Also this is my first audio review.

  25. Songs r totally different and I like all the songs!!

  26. Don’t expect like Annamalai or Muthu song. This is Kamals movie and he ensures the songs always part of the movie rather than a cut and dream songs. Given a choice, Kamal would go for a movie without songs.

  27. Kamalji has completely ruined it for me. A whopping 140 crore budjet and all he got was Himesh the ____. Himesh does make great songs everyn ow and then but usually when he sings ‘em. and in no way I would call in Himesh for such a grand project especially when its in South. ARR is one of the few noted musician/music directors from India considered in the World and that said , he is from Tamil Nadu – perfect guy for the Movie but no! Kamal wants to go with Himesh.
And whats all that goof with Daler Mahendi dancing to this stupid song. It looked as if Kamal was making a spoof movie. Kamal has been known for his off-beat cinema but often most of ‘em were box-office duds, I respect Him for his Courage, thoughts and as a person. People learn from mistakes and Kamal seems to not. Look and feel of the movie seems promising but they could have made the trailer look more Hollywood kinda but then again, they want their viewers to feel like “just another movie”. What I personally feel is – the chances of this movie to flop is more but let’s hope

  28. Dasa audio is average. Not bad for a Kamal movie. Kamal should have gone for ARR.

IRR is done for this life time. Lets not bring him in.

I would suggest to Kamal fort Marmayogi, he goes for ARR. If anyone knows Kamal personally and has read the feedback given by all his fans, they would prefer Kamal to work ARR.

Kamal vazha, ARR vazha = Marmayogi Blocbuster aavunge.

  29. For me Dasa audio is good but ARR would have done a better job. I have bought the cd and i like the songs after listening to it a few times. I wish Kamal all the best in thsi movie. My expectation on the movie is very high and hope the move delievrs.

As for Kamal’s next movie, he needs to work with ARR as it has been a while.

    All the best KAMAL.

  30. Dasavatharam audio is just average. It has been accepted because the movie has Kamal. Look at Bommalatam, a tharh album by himesh. Frankly speaking, I believe something is wrng with our Thala. They booked ARR and changed to Himesh. That is like choosing Kamal for a movie and choosing Simbu. Isn’t that crap. Same applies here. also i think songs should be songs and should not be edited to suit the movie. eg mukunda, it is a nice song but Kamals’ elderly voice irritates. Overall a very average album.
I hope Kamal makes peace with ARR and set him as the music dirctor for Marmayogi.

To all out there, if anyne knows Kamal personally, ask him to be smart and choose ARR for Marmayogi. A high class actor opting got low class music is unaccetable. Audio sales is just average. Once it released, people were excited. Now it has stopped.

Final say to Dasavatharm Team. The Audio has dissapointed alot of Kamal Fans. Why doesn’t our Thala hear our concerns? he makes movie and we support it. I think we need get this accross to our Thala.

I hope atleaset the movie does good.

I am sad with the Audio.

  31. The Music of dasaavatharam is average, its seems no body has concentrated on the music of 60 crore budget flim. Kamal would have thought having Himesh , the music can be used for bollywood hindi version. . Though i firmly believe it would have been better if music given to ARR, Harish or Yuvan shankar. Yuvan would have added variety . as i feel he has the only music who can have touch of ilayaraja with modern music blend.

  32. Hi all

I expected lot from dasaaudio but i never expected this kind of crap ARis the one who can score worthful music likefilm like these.i want to appriciate sadana for mugundha its excellent and the strange voice is really irritating in the end.For this song they missid to release the same track again without the strange voice.overall rating of songs is pretty dissapointing.

  33. i don listen to slow songs but when i heard mukuntha song of sadana’s voice it was really attractive … she has some power in her voice which pulled many to fall in that song …. and im listening that song always and im searching for the lyrics to sing …….

  34. Collection of Actor Ajith Movie Videos , Songs, Latest Movie News, Wallpapers,Gallery at http://www.actorajithmovies.com

  35. Kamal has cheated his FANS for Dasavatharam music. It is a real pity for a movie with such great prodcution, the music catered souns like for a low cost movie. The songs would have fit Arjun, Bharat type of music.

Kamal talsk alot abt the movie, I think he knows they made a misctake with the music.

  36. Dasa audio is bad. ARR is the right person.
Hope Marmatogi has ARR as Music Director.

  37. Dasa team made a big mistake with choosing Himesh as the music director. The songs are very average.

ARR should have been the right person. The movie took 2 years to complete. I believe ARR would have composed 5 songs in the within that period.

Dasa has drawn it’s 1st blood and the verdict is DISASTER in the form of HImesh Reshamiya. Looks like there is only the movie to look forward now.

I hope KAMAL learns his lesson here and goes for ARR for Marmayogi and future projects.

He needs to understand that Movie is one thing and audio is another thing. Hinmesh could not save the audio and i have read feedback all over and the audio is a FLOP.

I really hope Kamal learns. All the BIG WIGS (Rajni, Mani, Shanker) alll choose ARR and the movies does get saved.

If anyone knows Kamal, please advise him. For an actor which such Kaliber and quality and fan support, he needs to be smart enough to choose the right music director. I heard that it was the producer who choosed HR, but come on KAMAL can overwrite a decisions.

Well enough all said, I hope the movie rocks and Marmayogi has ARR.

  38. Himesh music is crap. Dasa audio is really boring to listen. I am not sure how KS and Kamal can say in TV that they were impressed with himesh’s tune in Dasavatharam. Both of them must be joking. Enough is enough with trip crap. They can cover all they want, everywhere in the internet and blogs i can see the music has been torn apart, I can hestly say, that it is the truth. Both Kamal and KSR has blown it this time. For a High Cost movie, the music sucks BIG ways. The ideal person is for High cost movie is ARR. Only he can do such magic.

I am very sad with the Audio. :-(

  39. This movie is gonna be a big flop like Hey ram, aalavandhaan. Kamalhassan does not know how to entertain the audience.
If we want a lesson in geography or history, we have Wikipedia. Thanks. And if all we want to see is make-up artist excellence, we’ll have hollywood.
What a loser this arrogant guy is. He’ll come down to earth after this.

  40. im so glad to see kamal fans totally unhappy with dasa songs , here`s the bet pulan visaranai -ii songs make hit a record audio sale this year than dasa .

  41. The Dasa audio is breaking all records set by any audio this year. It is the number 1 selling album now.

    Great Going!!!

  42. Songs are lil bit late pick-up ;) … Kamal fans hasted :) ) .. Now can anyone say that the songs are bad, after listening the songs for atleast 3 days! I’m a fan of A.R.R and KAMALHASSAN .. But Himesh did his part well! See the back ground score of him after movie release ;) … He always rocks! HIMESH KNOWS MUSIC WELL, KAMALHASSAN TOO ;;) ..

    ….HIMESH IS RIGHT CHOICE….

  43. I completely agree with you when you say that GVP or JS or Vidyasager could have done a much better job!!!

  44. The audio is an average album.
ARR is always the right man for big budget movie.

Hope the movie does not dissapoint like the audio. All the Best for the movie to become a blockbuster.

  45. yeah. dasa audio is jsut average and sounds too old. SONGS in kamals album are bound to have couple of great songs. but this doesnt have any.

rahman or shankar ehshaan loy would have done a better job without doubt. i dont knw how out of blue he chose himesh for dasavatharam. sounds pointless.

  46. Hi Anandhan,

You dont like Yuvan in Tamil?

Coz, you have mentioned Harris, GVP, Joshua etc. But Yuvan is more talented than these people. I guess he deserves composing music for giant movies like Dasa.

    Your comments please!!!

  47. Definitely, Yuvan is one of my favorite composers. It was just an oversight.

  48. Gr8. Thanks. :)

  49. I recently only heard all the songs from D..
its quite good.. something different from
    the usual branded tamil music..

appreciating this kind of music requires a different view.. for guys who like ‘mola mola nu’ from kuruvi.. apprciating D music would be tough though

  50. Kamal chose Himesh?
He didn’t. it was chosen by the producers. Kamal wanted Rehman initially.
I know this much. Decisions are formulated by economic compulsions.

  51. songs r nice enough

  52. Very enlightening and beneficial to someone whose been out of the circuit for a long time.
