The stakes were quite high for Vidyasagar after the immense success of Mozhi. I was really hoping that the Radhamohan-Vidyasagar combination would provide quality music one more time but Vidyasagar seems to lost it big time with this album. He seems to have gone back the 90’s with his music arrangements and the melody and Rhythm which are the core ingredients in a Vidyasagar score are strangely missing. This movie is obviously about a father-daughter relationship and nearly all the songs are indicative of that in one way or another.

Azhagiya Azhagiya Kili (SPB)
A heavy song with SPB fitting the bill perfectly. I would question the tune of Vidyasagar and the out of place Hindi interludes in the middle. The orchestration might actually work with the visual in the movie but it really does not impress if you are focused on just the musical aspect.

Chinnamma Kalyanam (Kailash Kher)
A bit song . I am not sure why this song is featured in this album.

Moongil Vittu Sendra (Madhu Balakrishnan)
Madhu sings this impressive bit song which has great lyrics.

Ore Oru Oorile (Kailash Kher)
A folk song sung by the very talented Kailash Kher. Again I am not very sure if he is the right choice for this song. There is a strong emphasis on lyrics in these kind of songs and the music director really needed someone who can sing clearly and sing the lyrics precisely. The tune really does not disappoint though and Kailash has done a great job.

Pachai Kaatre (Sadhana Sargam)
One of my favorite singers Sadhana Sargam has rendered this melody. Again this is not an outstanding song by any means but it is not bad either. There is a punjabi mix in the middle. This song reminds me of the Kadhal Enbathu song from the Ajith starrer “Poovellam Un Vaasam”.

Sher Punjabi (Rehan Khan)
All I can say is this is another song in the album.

Vaa Vaa En Dhevadaye (Madhu Balakrishnan)
The best song of the album. I have a two year old daughter so I might have picked this song but the real reason is Vidyasagar really makes his presence felt in this song.Madhu has really understood the meaning of this song and has rendered this composition with a lot of passion. It will be impossible for any parent to not admire the song. The lyrics are equally very impressive.

You can listen to the song at Vaa Vaa En

There is an instrumental version for all the songs in the movie and they pass muster. To his credit Vidyasagar has composed an album without any kuthu songs.

I am not sure if Vidyasagar composed the tune a good 10 years back or he has really missed the plot. This lapse in concentration rarely happens to Rehman , Harris or Yuvan but Vidyasagar has been guilty of this on a few occasions. During the Illayaraja days , the music directors had to shell out lot of tunes within a very short time span. so the chance of a really good tune/song was very small . Things have changed now and the audience really expects every album to be the best effort of the composers. Unfortunately they are going to be disappointed after listening to this album.

Maybe my review is based on the high expectations I had from Vidyasagar after the immaculate Mozhi but there are lot of music directors who are able to deliver consistently with high quality of music. Hopefully Radhamohan does not disappoint.

Vidyasagar has improved immensely as a music director over the years. He has gained in confidence after doing the music scores for Kamal and Rajini. This is the second movie for Vinay after the hugely successful “Unnale Unnale “. The music is enjoyable to say the least. This album is in sharp contrast to Kuruvi as there is more emphasis on melody.

Adai Mazhai Kaalam (Karthik)
The best song in the album in my opinion. Karthik does a brilliant job even though this song is precisely in his comfort zone. Vidyasagar enhances the songs with excellent touches with the violin. The lyrics are very simple and convey the mood of the song effectively. This song should be about the homecoming of the hero after a long time.

Adhai Koodava (Sriram Parthasarathy)
Another excellent melody from the music director. Sriram is one of the most underrated singers in the tamil music industry. He has a very soothing voice as it is evident from this performance. The mood of the song is very similar to the previous song except it is more specific and is only about the heroine.

Naan Marainthu (Hariharan and Madhusree)
Hariharan and Madhusree sing this duet . The song is very melodious and has the typical orchestration that Vidyasagar is very famous for.

Oru Or Naal (Benny)
The title song sung by the newcomer Benny. Benny impressed me with his performance in Subramnyapuram. This is a slightly faster song with some funky lyrics in the middle but Benny is up to the task and does what is expected of him.

Sutrivarum (Sadhana Sargam)
The song has a nice rhythm to it and Sadhana as usual excels with her peppy voice. This song is also slightly on the faster side. There is a nice bass guitar which provides the rhythm to the song. I would consider this to be the second best song in this album

Ullasa Ulagam (Tippu)
This is a remix of a popular hit from the 80’s. Vidyasagar has tried his best to preserve the originality of the song and he has succeeded for the most part. Tippu does a decent job as one might expect from him.

Overall this is a good album but it won’t blow you away.

Vidyasagar and Vijay have created many hits together and Kuruvi is no exception. It is a typical masala album which will please the fans of Vijay.Almost all the songs are fast paced and rhythmic .

Happy New Year ( Sunidhi Chauhan, Yogi, Dr Burn)

This is a Rap cum Kuthu song .It is a perfect start to the album and makes the intentions of the music director very obvious. Sunidhi Chauhan is the perfect choice and her heavy voice fits the song to a bill. Vidyasagar has experimented with his instrumentation and has come out a winner. The Kuthu beats have been used very differently and the rap mix in the middle is very catchy. Penned by Na Muthukumar, it has a pacy music with a lot of rhythm.

Dandana Dara (Sangeeth Haldipur)

A typical Kuthu song from Vidyasagar. The music director manages to sustain the momentum from start to finish. There is a nice rhythm to the song which makes it fun to listen to. Vijay is sure to set the stage on fire with this song. The only caveat is , this song reminds me of a song from Chandramukhi.

Thaen Thaen (Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghosal)

Shreya Ghosal is my favorite singer and she has done full justice to her talent in this song. Udit Naryan is average and just does what is expected of him. There is no doubt that he is one of the best singers in the industry but his hold of the language leaves a lot to be desired and I am still clueless as to why the music directors need him with the wealth of singers we have who can actually pronounce the words correctly. I am not trying to advocate that they have to pick regional singers; any singer from India should be able to sing anywhere in the country and I have no issue with Shreya Ghosal who is from North India but can sing the words properly. But to be really honest with all the regional divide that is going on in India it is better that we have this mix even if it sucks. Yugabharathy has handled the lyrics for this song. This soft and melodious number is the best song in the album.

Paalaanadhu Paalaanadhu (Vidyasagar, Rajalakshmi)

Heavy percussion instruments are Vidysagar’s forte and this song is no exception. The music director has also sung this song and he has not done a bad job. This song has it all for the discotheques and is sure to be a permanent resident in the clubs.Vijay has enough scope to show off his dancing abilities with such a versatile song.

Mozha Mozhanu (KK , Anuradha Sreeram)

A typical peppy song . There is nothing different or great about it . I was looking for the fast forward button halfway through the song.

Theme Music

I am not sure why the music director copied from Red Hot Chili peppers but he has enough originality in the song to claim it as his own . Heavy music is the order of the day and this song is no exception.

You can listen to some of the the songs at Vidyasagar
