Yuvvaraj – Music Review

Subash Ghai , Gulzar and Rehman are back after Taal and the expectations are naturally very high. Rehman has also been in very good touch with blockbuster hits to his credit in both Hindi and Tamil.

Main Hoon Yuuvraj (Salman Khan)
It is just an introductory song with no value. I have no idea why this bit was included in the album.

Tu Meri Dost Mein (Benny Dayal , Shreya Ghosal and Rehman)
A wonderful song about friendship , this piece is a haunting melody. A typical Rehman song with a emphatic violin presence , this song is sung beautifully by Benny Dayal and my favorite singer Shreya Ghosal. Benny has done a commendable job and is sure to go places with this album. Shreya is as usual awesome.Rehman chimes in as well. The orchestration reminds me of Rehman from his Rangeela days. This is the best song of the album.

Tu Muskara (Alka Yagnik , Javed Ali)
Another impressive and haunting melody, this song is sung by Alka Yagnik and Javed Ali. Javed Ali is becoming a permanent fixture in Rehman’s albums like Naresh Iyer. I am not really sure that Javed was the perfect choice for this song but Alka does a neat job. There is a Spanish guitar bit in the middle which refers back to the previous song.

Mastam Mastam (Sonu Nigam , Alka Yagnik,Naresh and Benny)
This is a peppy song . Sonu Nigam has sung the song with his own unique style. Sonu is heavily influenced by Mohmmaed Rafi and it shows very clearly in his every attempt. The tune is not conventional by any standards and is sure to raise a few eyebrows. Rehman is the king of these kind of tunes which are completely unpredictable.

Shanoo Shanoo (Sonu , Srinivas , Karthik , Timmy, Sunaina, Vivienne,Tina)
A fast paced song sung by a lot of singers. The song is good in bits and pieces but did not really impress me all that much.

Zindagi (Srinivas)
Srinivas is a popular singer in the south . The singer has enough talent to be the best in the business. This song fits Srinivas to perfection. This is a simple song with very little orchestration . Watch the opera piece in the middle and how Rehman has fused it into the song.

Dil Ka Rishta(Sonu Nigam , Roopkumar Rathod , Rehman)
The song starts off with a simple piano interlude. There is heavy orchestration to convey a very dramatic event in the movie. The overall ambiance of the song takes us back to the days when Boyzone and Backstreet Boys ruled the chart. The song did not really impress me a lot but it is still an interesting experiment.

Manmohini Morey ( Vijay Prakash)
Vijay is an interesting choice for this song. This song is a fast paced Piano driven Ghazal and is another unique composition of Rehman.Vijay sounds like Hariharan but his voice lacks the awesome tone which is the primary reason for Hariharan’s seamless transition into film music.

Shanno – Remix (featuring Ember)
The remix adds a Hip Hop flavor to the song and is much better than the original which is a little flat for a fast song.

This is not a mind blowing album by Rehman but originality and versatility is the key. Pritam is ruling the charts lately but he is a good music arranger and lacks originality even in its smallest form . Unlike copycats from yesteryear’s Pritam copies from anywhere and anywhere, including Korean soaps.Vishal-Shekhar and Rehman in my opinion are the very few music directors in Hindi Cinema capable of delivering albums with a western Theme. Shankar and his group are another talented bunch who rely heavily on melody.

Not awesome but good enough . This album is worth buying as Rehman’s albums will grow on you.

  1. to correct u ..Taal main gulzar nahi .. anand bakshi ke lyrics the ..

btw good review .. chill !!

  2. Thanks Dipendra. I will correct it.

  3. I am sure your opinion on the songs change when you hear it multiple times. It slowly grows on you. It is a mind-blowing album. Period.

  4. hi, this is singer srinivas…a friend told me that you had commented about my attitude problem… Of course sounds funny to people who know me.. Just curious to know where you heard this…

  5. It is just stuff I read in the internet about you not getting along well with music directors. I have no intention of tarnishing your image so I am going to change my blod. If this is the real srinivas I apologize for the trouble.

  6. HI read rather late this review of Yuvvraj music. having heard it first in surround the core filling the rooms more so the strings, and then on ipod every day i feel every one to his taste of music. But comparing each singer is not good but must go on the merit of the singer in that particular song. One must not compare Sonu Nigam to the great Rafi and so also Srinivas to Hariharan. To me he sounded great and the modulations were excellent given he is from South. I was reminded by the pathos in the song of another one by rafi in Raajkumar(Rang bare duniya men….)

The music of YUvvraj grows on you if you listen to the songs and the score in ipod where every instrument is audible and relevant to the score. The reviewer like many in these blogs wants a bench mark from Rahman himself. Taal and other hits like Guru and the rest got the music to suit the story line. No wonder with the story line set in Europe the music has to be what rahman has given with not a single tabla beat or profusion of flute notes by Naveen.
Lets judge Rahman’s music year by year and i lookat this music as an award(s) winner.
To talk of Pritam and others is in bad taste. The masses also need music and the heavily orchestrated Yuvvraj music could be above them. So we do need others too.

IN short Yuvvraj has songs to please all from the peppy Shano to the teens, mastham mastham for kids and a great manmohiney for the aesthetics, Zindagi for the melodists and the two duets muskura and thuhi thoo hai for all cuting across age and taste barriers. Thanks take this as my view than review. EWhen you review your head dictates when you express your view as a listener its from heart. Thye hed analyses while hearing just pleases:) i am gifted with an ear to hear good music no head to know what i hear is the best. With smile i switch off.

  7. please ignore the typos. the core in first line shd read score. The others as they occur pl forgive. As i said when heart dictates grammer and key board slow down. It needs a head and a steady hand to be perfect!!

  8. Hey compaƱero, realmente tenido gusto este poste. Can’ t parece conseguirlo para dar formato a la derecha en Internet Explorer, se dobla todo para arriba, pero no trabaja muy bien en Firefox tan ninguna preocupación.

  9. Backstreet boys is a very popular band during my teenage years, they are great performers too.”;”

  10. when i hear about the songs of Backstreet Boys, i remember good old college days’-’
